MILLBURN, NJ ? Kids and teens looking for a place to express their creativity this summer have found just the place, at Blueprint Studio, located at 432 Wyoming Avenue.? Blueprint is offering summer camps in both fashion design and photography, led by industry experts.
Fashion designers Maria Hartley and Lauren Zodel came up with this unique concept out of their desire to share their years of experience with a younger generation.? Hartley said they wanted to create ?a place where kids can come and learn to express their individual style in a creative place.?
Week-long summer camps will have specific themes, some for younger children, ages 6-12, and others for teens 13-17.? Participants will learn the concepts and the practical skills that are a part of the designing process.? For fashion camps, this means everything from creating concept boards, sketching, sewing, competing finished garments and putting on fashion shows.
?We live in this great community where the arts are embraced,? Hartley, a longtime Maplewood resident, said.? ?Kids here have their own sense of style from a very young age.?
Fashion Design camps will be taught by Hartley, who has designed clothes for many iconic brands for 20 years, and Zodell, who currently teaches fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
They have brought in local professional photographers to lead the Photography Camps, and are excited to open the doors to their new studio.
?We want kids to grow up healthy, happy and confidant, and the arts are a large part of that,? Hartley said.? ?It?s important to give kids a sense of confidence about who they are.?
In addition to the Summer Camps for Fashion, Photography and Accessories, the studio will be offering classes after school in the Fall.? They also host themed birthday parties in the studio space that keep the participants captivated and engaged.
The team recently coordinated a ?Project Runway? event for Marshall and Jefferson School students that was a huge success, with 45 participants.? Teams of students (from kindergarten to fifth grade) designed and created outfits and then walked the runway in front of an appreciative audience.? Hartley said they would welcome the opportunity to create more programs in the local schools.
For now, they are working hard to put the finishing touches on the studio, and a planning an Open House on Saturday, June 8. ?Creative kids (and parents) mark your calendars!
