Blueprint Studio Bringing Creative Camps and Classes for Future ...

MILLBURN, NJ ? Kids and teens looking for a place to express their creativity this summer have found just the place, at Blueprint Studio, located at 432 Wyoming Avenue.? Blueprint is offering summer camps in both fashion design and photography, led by industry experts.

Fashion designers Maria Hartley and Lauren Zodel came up with this unique concept out of their desire to share their years of experience with a younger generation.? Hartley said they wanted to create ?a place where kids can come and learn to express their individual style in a creative place.?

Week-long summer camps will have specific themes, some for younger children, ages 6-12, and others for teens 13-17.? Participants will learn the concepts and the practical skills that are a part of the designing process.? For fashion camps, this means everything from creating concept boards, sketching, sewing, competing finished garments and putting on fashion shows.

?We live in this great community where the arts are embraced,? Hartley, a longtime Maplewood resident, said.? ?Kids here have their own sense of style from a very young age.?

Fashion Design camps will be taught by Hartley, who has designed clothes for many iconic brands for 20 years, and Zodell, who currently teaches fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.

They have brought in local professional photographers to lead the Photography Camps, and are excited to open the doors to their new studio.

?We want kids to grow up healthy, happy and confidant, and the arts are a large part of that,? Hartley said.? ?It?s important to give kids a sense of confidence about who they are.?

In addition to the Summer Camps for Fashion, Photography and Accessories, the studio will be offering classes after school in the Fall.? They also host themed birthday parties in the studio space that keep the participants captivated and engaged.

The team recently coordinated a ?Project Runway? event for Marshall and Jefferson School students that was a huge success, with 45 participants.? Teams of students (from kindergarten to fifth grade) designed and created outfits and then walked the runway in front of an appreciative audience.? Hartley said they would welcome the opportunity to create more programs in the local schools.

For now, they are working hard to put the finishing touches on the studio, and a planning an Open House on Saturday, June 8. ?Creative kids (and parents) mark your calendars!

Bucs?rally late to beat Tigers? |? Phils top BoSox

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Anibal Sanchez spent six innings toying with the Pittsburgh Pirates, his electric stuff rendering the Pirates innocent bystanders.

When the Detroit starter finally wobbled, Pittsburgh wasted little time knocking him over.

Pedro Alvarez's two-run double sparked a seventh-inning rally and the Pirates streaked by the Tigers 5-3 on Wednesday night. Travis Snider added an RBI double and Jordy Mercer laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to cap the four-run burst and abruptly end Sanchez's evening.

"I don't think as a team we ever check out in the seventh inning," Snider said. "We've had a lot of late comebacks we've had a lot of great rallies off bullpens and starters late in the game."

The victory was Pittsburgh's eighth of the year when it trailed after six innings and pushed the Pirates to a season-high 13 games over .500 (33-20). Bryan Morris (2-2) picked up the win in relief of A.J. Burnett. Jason Grilli pitched the ninth for his major league-leading 22nd save.

Miguel Cabrera hit his 15th home run for Detroit. He flied out to the wall in right field with a runner on to end it.

Neil Walker - whose solo home run in the 11th inning produced the only run in a 1-0 Pittsburgh victory in Detroit on Tuesday night - provided the only two hits through off six innings off Sanchez. The righthander looked nearly as dominant as he did in his previous start, when he one-hit the Minnesota Twins.

Sanchez retired 16 of 17 batters at one point and appeared to have all the cushion he needed when Andy Dirks doubled home Don Kelly with one out in the fifth and Cabrera followed two batters later by poking a 92 mph fastball from A.J. Burnett into the seats in right field for his 15th home run, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Watching Sanchez buzz through the first six innings on just 67 pitches, Detroit manager Jim Leyland didn't even have anyone up in the bullpen when things quickly unraveled.

Garrett Jones singled with one out in the seventh, Russell Martin walked on four pitches and the floodgates opened.

"It was kind of a freaky thing," Leyland said. "He just walked a guy and all of a sudden kind of lost it there momentarily."

Alvarez followed by driving a ball to the wall in left-center, scoring both runners. Snider took the next pitch and hit it off the wall in right with Alvarez just beating the relay throw to put Pittsburgh in front.

"We knew as hitters we had to grind," Snider said. "If he's going to make a mistake, it's going to be early. Pedro did a great job jumping on him early, so did Jones. Russell the same thing, getting on base. Before they were able to get anything going in their bullpen we were able to get to him in that inning."

Snider moved to third on a wild pitch, then darted home when Mercer's bunt stopped just in front of the pitcher's mound. It's one of the few times the squeeze has worked for the Pirates under manager Clint Hurdle.

"It was kind of surprising," Mercer said. "In those situations all you want to do is put it in fair territory somewhere. I was able to deaden it. It actually worked out really well for both sides."

Sanchez allowed five runs on seven hits in 6 2-3 innings, walking one and striking out nine while his ERA rose from 2.38 to 2.79.

"I think I missed some pitches and they hit them," Sanchez said. "I take responsibility, that's part of the game. Before that inning I thought everything was working good, especially location."

Pittsburgh's late surge allowed Burnett to escape his fourth straight loss. The Pirates have struggled to support their ace this season and had scored just five runs total in his previous five starts.

The right-hander had issues with his command but managed to stay out of trouble until the fifth, when Kelly's leadoff walk started a three-run burst. Burnett gave up three runs on five hits, walking four and striking out four.

Burnett was long gone by the time Alvarez got things going. Tony Watson worked the eighth and Grilli - who struck out the Tigers in order in the 11th on Tuesday - stayed perfect in 22 save chances when Cabrera flied out.

NOTES: Detroit OF Torii Hunter sustained a contusion on his left elbow after getting hit by Morris' fastball in the seventh. Hunter said the pain made him "dizzy" but X-rays were negative. ... Tigers CF Austin Jackson is likely heading to Triple-A Toledo this weekend while he recovers from an injured left hamstring that's had him on the disabled list since May 12. Leyland said he'd like to test Jackson's hamstring before activating him ... A Pirates season ticket holder provided Grilli with a fish tank that includes three small sharks and a blowfish. Grilli and setup man Mark Melancon have nicknamed Pittsburgh's bullpen the "Shark Tank." ... The Pirates are 24-1 this season when leading after seven innings ... The series concludes on Thursday. Pittsburgh's Jeff Locke (5-1, 2.45 ERA) will look for his sixth straight victory. Doug Fister (5-2, 3.65 ERA) starts for the Tigers.

The Importance of VPS Web Hosting | Day Dreaming Space

As we can see day in and day out, internet has become one main crucial aspect of today?s human life. Businesses, entertainment, and even shopping are done online. File sharing and swapping can also be conveniently done through internet. Thus, it is not surprising if internet is considered as an important medium for business.

You can guarantee that most of shops and businesses today have established their online websites. To run a website, you will need to ?rent? a space in the internet from a web hosting. Web hosts themselves are companies or individuals who own spaces in internet and provide people who want to have their own websites.

There are many regular web hosting servers such as dedicated server, virtual private server or VPS web hosting. VPS web hosting is then known to be the most advantageous one among others. It is a big server which is broken down into many small virtual servers with their own operating systems. A VPS web hosting also allows web owners to install their own software and have complete technical control to their own websites. From the security part, it allows web owners to have password to protect their websites. If you need more information about VPS web hosting, you can always find it on the internet.

Threatening letters sent to N.Y. Mayor may contain ricin : police

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two letters addressed to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his gun control group contained material believed to be the deadly poison ricin, and referenced the debate on gun laws, police said on Wednesday.

The New York Police Department said initial tests on the two letters, opened in New York on Friday and Washington, D.C. on Sunday, indicated the presence of ricin.

Emergency workers who came in contact with the letters initially showed minor symptoms of ricin exposure, the police said. Those symptoms have since abated. Civilian personnel in New York and Washington who came in contact with the opened letters showed no symptoms of ricin exposure.

The Washington letter was opened by Mark Glaze, the director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group founded by Bloomberg that lobbies for stricter gun laws. The other letter was opened at a mail facility in Manhattan.

Both contained threats against Bloomberg and mentioned the gun debate, police said in a statement.

The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and the NYPD Intelligence Division are investigating the incident.

The discovery of the letters comes just weeks after ricin-tainted letters were mailed to President Barack Obama and other government officials. James Everett Dutschke, 41, a martial arts instructor, was arrested in Tupelo, Mississippi, on April 27 on suspicion of mailing those letters.

Ricin is a lethal poison found naturally in castor beans, but it takes a deliberate act to convert it into a biological weapon. Ricin can cause death within 36 to 72 hours from exposure to an amount as small as a pinhead. No known antidote exists.

U.S. spelling bee starts with a new challenge : definitions

By Ian Simpson

OXON HILL, Maryland (Reuters) - Sometimes-nervous contestants in the United States' Scripps National Spelling Bee launched two days of competition on Wednesday, facing the new challenge of not only having to spell obscure words correctly, but also knowing what they mean.

A total of 281 contestants aged 8 to 14 from across the United States and other countries took to the stage for a preliminary spelling round in the spelling bee. The finals are on Thursday night.

For the first time since it began in 1927, the contest is requiring young spellers in preliminary and semifinal rounds to take a computerized vocabulary test. Organizers say it is part of the Bee's commitment to deepening contestants' command of English.

Sixteen spellers were eliminated in a first onstage round, with a second round to come for survivors. They stumbled on such words as "sinecure," a paid job with little work; "weissnichtwo," an imaginary place; and "yannigan," player in an individualized baseball game.

Some spellers were visibly nervous before advancing to the microphone in the packed auditorium, clutching arms to sides, jiggling feet or crossing themselves.

"I felt a little nervous before I got on stage, but once I was on stage I was OK," said Matthew Griffin, a 12-year-old home schooled eighth grader from Bailey, N.C., who correctly spelled "panglossian," or extreme optimism.

"It's pretty cool. I've made a lot of friends," he said.

Owen Duffy, 13, from Fort Johnson Middle School in Charleston, S.C., did not fare as well.

Given "langlauf" to spell, the seventh grader asked chief pronouncer Jacques Bailly for the pronunciation of the German word for cross-country skiing several times.

"Langlauf? Langlauf? Langlauf?" Duffy said slowly. He barely finished spelling it, incorrectly, before his time ran out.

Almost all the contestants asked for the origin of the word, the kind of word and a definition, which is allowed as an aid to spelling. They then wrote it out on the palm of their hands with a fingertip while spelling aloud.

DEFINE THAT

Since 2002, a written or computer spelling test has been a component that, along with onstage spelling, factored in determining which spellers advanced to the semi-finals.

This year, competitors will advance to the semi-finals and finals based on their onstage spelling, as well as computer-based spelling and vocabulary questions. Vocabulary evaluation will count for half of a speller's overall score.

Contestants said the multiple-choice test taken on Tuesday was fairly easy for them. Amber Born, 14, a home-schooled eighth grader from Marblehead, Massachusetts, said after the first round of spelling that it "was good, it was fun."

Standing next to Born, Katherine Wang, an 11-year-old sixth grader from the Qooco School in Beijing, called it "nerve-wracking."

"It was multiple choice, so you could narrow it down," Born said. She and Wang had met at last year's contest and stayed in touch through e-mail.

Griffin said the test was "a little hard. I knew how to spell the words but now having to know them makes the challenge a little harder."

Paige Kimble, the Bee's executive director who won the competition in 1981, told a news conference the decision to add the vocabulary test had come after about a year and a half of discussion.

A key element was support from spellers and their parents who believed that adding the test would increase the tournament's prestige, she said.

The contestants hail from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and Defense Department schools around the world. Some contestants come from the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan and South Korea.

The Bee is taking place at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center outside Washington. It is being broadcast by ESPN.

The contestants range from third to eighth graders, with 116 speaking more than one language. The group is 52 percent girls and 48 percent boys, organizers said.

Good Samaritan rescues 3 after car crashes into swimming pool

A grandmother and her two granddaughters have a good Samaritan to thank for their safe rescue after they drove into a swimming pool.

The scary incident happened on Tuesday afternoon in Yorba Linda, Calif. Neighbor Anita Campbell heard what sounded like an explosion and children crying, and she took action.

She found a car with the 66-year-old grandmother and her two grandchildren, ages 6 and 9, submerged in her neighbor?s pool. The driver had apparently lost control while driving down a hill, crashed through a brick wall and landed in the water.

?I couldn?t get the doors open in the car. Luckily, the two windows on the passenger side were open. I had the girls unbuckle and come out to me,? Campbell told local station KCAL9. Then she got the grandmother to also get out through a window.

?It was just timing. I just felt I needed to get them out of the car as fast as I could,? Campbell added.

The three victims were taken to the hospital and reported to be in stable condition.

Court stays out of Planned Parenthood funding case

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Indiana will likely stop defending a law that stripped Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood after the Supreme Court declined to hear the case Tuesday, an attorney who represents the nation's largest abortion provider said.

Indiana is among more than a dozen states that have enacted or considered laws to prevent taxpayers' money from funding organizations that provide abortion. The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Oct. 23 that the law targeting Planned Parenthood went too far because it denied women the right to choose their own medical providers.

"I assume at this point the state will give up in its claim that that portion of the statue is valid under the Social Security Act," said Ken Falk, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana. The case now returns to U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt, who granted the initial preliminary injunction to temporarily block the law, precipitating the state's appeals.

TheFamily and Social Services Administration ? the agency tasked with enforcing the law ? declined comment.

"My office always contended this is ultimately a dispute between the state and federal government, not between a private medical provider and the state," Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said in a statement. Zoeller's office handled the state's appeal.

The justices who rejected the state's appeal of the appeals' court ruling also did not comment.

The law aimed to deny Planned Parenthood funds from the joint federal-state Medicaid health program for the poor that are used for general health services including cancer screening.

Planned Parenthood warned that the law would deny more than 9,000 women access to other important health care services such as breast cancer screenings, birth control and prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. The organization was forced to stop seeing Medicaid patients for little more than a month, between the time the law was signed and the district court ruling saying it couldn't be enforced.

"While the state has been trying to score political points and wasting taxpayer dollars, we've been standing up for the Hoosiers who count on us every day. We look forward to the day the preliminary injunction in this case becomes permanent," Betty Cockrum, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana, said in a statement.

Pratt's June 2011 decision blocked parts of the abortion law and granted Planned Parenthood of Indiana's request for a preliminary injunction on the state's move to defund the organization. Her decision sided with federal officials who said states cannot restrict Medicaid recipients' freedom to choose their health care provider or disqualify Medicaid providers merely because they also offer abortions.

Sen. Scott Schneider, R-Indianapolis, who sponsored the original bill, said he was disappointed the justices declined to hear the case because he believed the rulings left open a loophole in federal law barring public funding for abortion.

He said anti-abortion legislators would have to study the ruling and determine if there might be another approach.

Falk said the court rulings leave intact the state's power to block Planned Parenthood from receiving federal grants through the U.S. Department of Health, but those funds were a far smaller amount than the money the organization received from Medicaid.

The case now goes back to Pratt, who will decide whether to make the preliminary injunction permanent. Pratt was appointed in 2010 by President Barack Obama.

High School Class President Prays in Jesus' Name at Graduation Despite Atheist Objections

May 28, 2013|6:57 pm

Jonathan Hardwick

(Photo: facebook/Jonathan Hardwick)

Lincoln County High School class president, Jonathan Hardwick.

"If you would like to join me, take off your hats and bow your heads," Hardwick asked his classmates before he began the prayer, a recording of which is posted on YouTube.

"Thank you for helping us get here safely today, Lord, and thank you for the many blessings you have given us because we are a very talented class," he added.

He then capped it off with: "Help us remember no matter what happens, good or bad in the days to come that it is for your divine purpose, in Jesus' name, Amen."

His prayer kicked off a round of cheers and a standing ovation from his largely supportive class for several seconds in the video that has sparked a growing online debate over whether he should have been allowed to pray despite objections from students.

"By having it read on stage at a public event, it was being sponsored by the public and completely unconstitutional," argued Adam Debling in his comments on the recorded video of the prayer on YouTube.

Follow us

"God bless you for having the courage and the strength of your convictions to stand for Our Lord Jesus Christ. Christians all over this country need to stand up and stop government from oppressing our faith!" wrote another commenter, Bob White.

Earlier this month, Lincoln County High Principal Tim Godbey confirmed in an interview with The Advocate-Messenger?that a group of six students, including one atheist had asked him to cut the prayer from the graduation ceremony.

Godbey, who is a Christian, explained that while teachers are prohibited from praying publicly on school property or at school-sponsored events under separation of church and state laws students face no such barrier. They are free to express themselves as long as it is not disruptive.

A number of local residents also reportedly demonstrated in support of prayer in the school while Kentucky State Police patrolled the area.

Local atheist activist Ricky Smith said: "Having church groups at the entrance of the school makes non-Christian students as well as their family members and friends feel uncomfortable and even threatened."

He said he would be alerting the American Civil Liberties Union and the Freedom From Religion Foundation about the school's public prayer which he feels violated the civil rights of students who are not Christians.

Responding to a similar argument on YouTube, however, Sarah Gonzalez said: "He was in the position to give a speech which he did. His prayer said nothing condemning nor intolerant. No one was forced to participate in the prayer or say "Amen". It is a shame that so many feel it is a violation of their rights to mention God but do not see it as a violation of Christians right to forbid us from mentioning Him. I, for one, would have also stood and applauded."

Summer guide: College monsters, Beyonce tour

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Sure, your favorite season might be winter, for the snow sports and the holidays, or autumn for the leaves, or spring for the sense of renewal. Bag that. No season can win our hearts like summer, with its long days, warm nights, beach trips, drive-in movies, picnics and vacation getaways. Even if you don't get a summer vacation anymore, there's something about the season that begins with Memorial Day and runs through Labor Day that just screams fun.?Here's a quick look at some of the summer entertainment that will be filling the next three months.

Pixar, AMC, Universal

Summer events include "Monsters University," the return of "Breaking Bad," and Beyonce on tour.

?

Movies: 'Monsters' enroll in college, Superman flies again
Summer's always an exploding popcorn machine of movie joy. Don't expect Oscar material in these sunbaked months, just escape to the air-conditioned multiplex and a good old blockbuster or two. If you've got kids in tow, look ahead to "Monsters University" (June 21), where the scarers from "Monsters Inc." go to college, and cute "Turbo" (July 19), featuring a slowpoke snail who dreams of racing in the Indy 500. If superheroes are your thing, Superman flies again in "Man of Steel" (June 14) and Wolverine's claws come out again in "The Wolverine" on July 24. And other summer flicks include Brad Pitt fighting a global zombie invasion in "World War Z" and Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy as cop buddies in "The Heat." See our list of?11 great summer movies?for more.

Live music: Both of Blue Ivy's parents go on tour
If live music's your thing, there's no better season than summer to catch a concert tour or festival.?Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z?will be the best-dressed touring musicians out there with their "Legends of the Summer Tour,"?which begins July 13 in Toronto and powers right on through February. And Jay-Z's better half,?Beyonce, made headlines already in the European part of the?Mrs.?Carter?Show?World?Tour.?She had to cancel a show, and the inevitable pregnancy rumors were sparked (Jay-Z denied them). She'll hit the U.S. beginning June 28 in L.A. and end in New York on Aug. 5. If Bon Jovi's your man, the Jersey boy's "Because We Can" tour comes to America July 12 with a Chicago show and rocks the East Coast through the dog days of July. And?if?you?like?your?music?a?bit?retro,?Chicago,?Fleetwood?Mac and Yes?are?all?touring?this?summer --?sadly,?not?together.

Black Sabbath has a new album coming -- and Ozzy's on it.

Albums: Ozzy is back with Sabbath, Kanye's mysterious album
If you can't make it out to a concert, mark your calendar with the release dates of these long-awaited summer albums. On June 11, Black Sabbath will release "13," its first album with Ozzy Osbourne in 35 years. Kanye West has been mysterious about his album's release date (and its title), but a tweet of "June Eighteen"?has many believing "Yeezus" is coming out that day -- unless that's just the due date for his baby with Kim Kardashian. Others to note: Queens of the Stone Age's "...Like Clockwork" (June 4), Bret Michaels' "Jammin' With Friends" (June 24), John Legend's "Love in the Future" (June 25).

TV: Summer's not just for reruns any more, right, Walter White?
Summer TV used to be all reruns and baseball games, but no more. Plenty of shows start up new seasons in the summer months, and some of them are highly anticipated. If reality competitions are your thing, find out if "America's Got Talent" when that show returns to NBC June 4, or start spying on the "Big Brother" housemates starting June 26 on CBS. Prefer your summer TV with a chaser of O Negative? HBO vampire drama "True Blood" is back June 16, and equally bloody serial-killer series "Dexter"?is back on Showtime June 30. Stephen King fans can see how his giant book, "Under the Dome," makes the leap to TV on June 24 on CBS. But perhaps the most-awaited series of the summer comes back on Aug. 11 when chemistry teacher-turned-meth-maker Walter White and "Breaking Bad" return to AMC. (For a full schedule of summer shows, click here.)

Random House

Dan Brown's "Inferno" takes readers into Dante's vision of hell.

Books: Not hot enough? Dan Brown takes readers to Dante's 'Inferno'
One of the hottest summer reads is already out -- "Da Vinci Code" author Dan Brown has just published "Inferno," in which symbologist Robert Langdon must wrestle with the secrets of Dante's journey through hell. And if you know and love "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls (former gossip columnist for this site), you'll want to look for her new heartbreaking novel, "The Silver Star," due out June 11. If "The Devil Wears Prada" was a beach read for you in 2004, slather up that Coppertone -- the sequel, "Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns," is out June 4.

Home video: We're off to see the Wizard
If it's too hot, or too muggy, or too whatever to go out, you can spend your summer nights vegging on the couch with new DVDs (or Blu-ray, if that's your thing). If your kids have worn out your copy of "The Wizard of Oz," you might travel the yellow brick road to "Oz the Great and Powerful" when it comes out June 11 -- but fair warning, the flying monkeys are even scarier in this version. If you lack HBO but want to get caught up on the Aaron Sorkin-created show "The Newsroom," the first season comes to home video June 11 too. And the working drones at Dunder-Mifflin wrapped up their series this year, you can relive their crazy workplace with the ninth and final season of "The Office," due out Aug. 13.

NANCY GIRL: MEMORIAL WEEKEND TRIP TO THE RANCH PART 3

Let's just do this as a picture story...it was really relaxing (for the most part) and truly inspirational for my creative head. I am also brainstorming some beauty or candy ideas or something I can do with the natural resources there (like all the fruit and natural herbs and trees, etc)...

One more post next and then we'll plunge right back into Resort. Hope you all had a great weekend. Even though I didn't do any vintage shopping (which is amazing here) or writing (which I needed to tackle but did not), I still got a lot out of it. ?

Sony Action Cam

The Sony Action Cam, at $199.99 or $269.99 (list) for built-in Wi-Fi, is one of the more affordable action cameras available that still offers features like 1080p60 recording. Unfortunately, its video performance is just not up to snuff when compared with superlative offerings like the Editors' Choice GoPro Hero3 Black Edition. The Sony Action Cam?will capture your extreme moments on the cheap, but serious videographers should look elsewhere.

Design and Features
Compared with the boxy GoPro Hero3, the Action Cam looks far more streamlined with its barrel design. The camera measures about 1.9 by 1 by 3.3 inches (HWD) and weighs 2 ounces, making it a hair lighter than the 2.6-ounce Hero3. On the right side are a monochrome LCD and Prev/Next buttons. Around back are a large Record button and a hold switch. The back also slides open to reveal the battery compartment and microSD card slot that accepts cards up to 64GB. A compartment on the bottom houses micro USB and micro HDMI ports and a 3.5mm microphone jack. ?

Like with the GoPro, you cycle through all the settings using the LCD, but the Action Cam uses all three buttons for navigation. Prev and Next scroll through options, and pressing the Record button makes selections. Unfortunately, you can't change any of the settings once the Action Cam is in its waterproof housing, which is a big inconvenience for on-the-fly adjustments. There's a small red indicator light on the back, and like the GoPro, the Action Cam makes a loud beep to confirm shooting.

The accessory selection for the Action Cam isn't quite as diverse as GoPro's. The Action Cam comes with a waterproof housing (submergible to 197 feet) and one adhesive mount for attaching the camera to a helmet. Beyond that, you can get optional handle bar, headband, and suction cup mounts. Once mounted, you can't adjust the angle or tilt of the camera?for that you'll need the optional tilt adapter, which is a bit of bummer. The GoPro Hero3 offers far more mounting options out of the box, including the ability to tilt, while the Drift Innovation HD Ghost?has a unique twistable lens that allows for adjusting to get the level right even while it's mounted.

The Wi-Fi version allows you to connect the Action Cam to iOS and Android devices using a free app. From there you can change shooting settings, trigger shots, use your device as a viewfinder, and upload videos to the Web. Battery life was pretty solid with the Sony Action Cam, while the GoPro Hero3's Wi-Fi functionality was a huge battery drain.

Video Quality and Conclusions
The Sony Action Cam can shoot video at 1080p60, 1080p30, 720p30, and 720p120 resolutions and frame rates. It's a respectable variety, but still falls short of the Hero3's 4K shooting mode, even though that's limited to 15 frames per second. ?

For testing, we sent the Hero3, Sony Action Cam, and Drift HD Ghost out with our photographer on his most recent ski trip. Video quality at 1080p60 on the Action Cam was a bit of a letdown, lacking the same clarity and high-level of detail you find on the Hero3. Details, like bare tree branches, appear smeared and the footage has an overall graininess to it. Exposures look accurate in good lighting, but the Action Cam struggled in low-light and could not keep up with the Hero3 or the Drift HD Ghost.

Still image quality is pretty average here, and as with all action cameras, you're dealing with a good amount of lens distortion. Images top out at 2-megapixels, while the Hero3 can shoot at 12-, 7-, or 5-megapixels. It captures a fair amount of detail, and would be suitable for quick uploads online, but finer details look smudged and images appear flat.

At $200 for the base model and $270 for the Wi-Fi equipped model, the Sony Action Cam is a relative bargain. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for, as the Action Cam was handily beaten by the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition in every regard except battery life. Video performance is pretty disappointing, and compared with the Hero3, the Action Cam misses the mark when it comes to crisp details. On top of that, Sony cannot match GoPro's diversity of mounting options, and the fact that you can't adjust settings on the fly without pairing to a Wi-Fi enabled smartphone or tablet is a pretty big drawback.?

How can Chuck Hagel fix military sexual assault epidemic? (+video)

President Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel have stressed to graduates of the US military academies that rampant rates of sexual assault could corrode the force.

On consecutive days, President Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel have told the next generation of military leaders that sexual assault is threatening the dignity and effectiveness of the force.

Though the war in Afghanistan continues, the Obama administration has, in many ways, already begun to turn the Pentagon toward a new set of challenges. Mr. Obama's address to the National Defense University Thursday spoke to the strategic parts of that shift ? from stricter rules for drone strikes to new rules for the detention facility at Guant?namo Bay.

But the president's speech the next day to graduates of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., stressed that stamping out an epidemic of sexual assault within the military must also be a primary goal. Secretary Hagel made the same point Saturday in a speech to graduates at the US Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

But what can be done?

There is ample evidence to suggest that no solution will be easy or quick. A survey released earlier this month suggests that 26,000 people in the military were sexually assaulted in the previous year ? a rate of 70 a day. Moreover, only 3,400 incidents were reported, suggesting a widespread lack of confidence in the military justice system on the issue.

Due to a lack of research, the trend line is unclear. The current number is up from the previous year (19,000) but down from 2006 (34,000).

Meanwhile, recent weeks have brought a flood of troubling allegations. This month, two members of military sexual-assault prevention units ? one for the Air Force and one at the Army's Fort Hood in Texas ? have been accused of sexual assault. And last week, a sergeant at West Point was charged with secretly videotaping female cadets in the shower.

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) of Missouri has introduced a bill to ensure that ?never again will a victim have to salute an assaulter," according to NBC News. It would require a member of the military who has been found guilty of sexual assault to be dismissed or dishonorably discharged. While it would also prohibit a commander from nullifying or changing a sexual-assault conviction, it would not remove sexual-assault cases from the chain of command entirely.

That has been a point of contention for critics, who note that commanders often reduce or eliminate punishments resulting from sexual-assault investigations. To address this, a competing bill by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) of New York would create a separate procedure for dealing with sexual-assault cases.

But Pentagon officials strongly resist the idea of taking control out of the hands of commanders, saying such a move would undermine unit cohesiveness and discipline. Hagel, too, has said he is against removing sex-assault cases from the chain of command.

(AP Photo / MOD)

(AP) ? A suspect in last week's savage killing of a British soldier on a London street was arrested in Kenya in 2010 while apparently preparing to train and fight with al-Qaida-linked Somali militants, an anti-terrorism police official said Sunday.

Michael Adebolajo was then handed over to British authorities in the East African country, another Kenyan official said.

The information surfaced as London's Metropolitan Police said specialist firearms officers arrested another man suspected of conspiring to murder 25-year-old soldier Lee Rigby. Police did not provide details about the suspect, only saying he is 22 years old.

The latest arrest followed the detainment in London late Saturday of three others, aged 21 to 28, also suspected in the case.

Rigby, who has served in Afghanistan, was run over and stabbed with knives in the Woolwich area in southeast London on Wednesday afternoon as he was walking near his barracks.

Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, are the main suspects in the killing and remained under armed guard in separate London hospitals after police shot them at the scene.

In 2010, Adebolajo was arrested with five others near Kenya's border with Somalia, Kenya's anti-terrorism police unit head Boniface Mwaniki told The Associated Press. Police believed Adebolajo was going to work with Somali militant group al-Shabab.

Mwaniki said that Adebolajo was deported after his arrest in 2010. Kenya's government spokesman said he was arrested under a different name, and taken to court before being handed to British authorities.

"Kenya's government arrested Michael Olemindis Ndemolajo. We handed him to British security agents in Kenya and he seems to have found his way to London and mutated to Michael Adebolajo," spokesman Muthui Kariuki said. "The Kenyan government cannot be held responsible for what happened to him after we handed him to British authorities."

Kariuki said Adebolajo was traveling on a British passport, but he could not confirm if it was authentic.

When asked whether British security agents and embassy officials handled Adebolajo in Kenya, a Foreign Office spokeswoman declined to comment, only saying in a statement: "We can confirm a British national was arrested in Kenya in 2010. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office provided consular assistance as normal for British nationals."

Rigby's grieving family visited the scene of his murder on Sunday, pausing for a few moments in reflection and laying flowers to join the hundreds of floral tributes already left at the nearby Woolwich Barracks by wellwishers.

The soldier's gruesome murder has horrified Britain, partly because it was captured by witnesses' cellphones. A video picked up by British media showed one of the suspects, with bloodied hands, making political statements and warning of more violence as the soldier lay on the ground behind him.

Hardline Muslim leaders have identified the man in the video as Adebolajo, an Islam convert who allegedly used to take part in London demonstrations organized by British radical group al-Muhajiroun. The group catapulted to notoriety after the Sept. 11 attacks by organizing an event to celebrate the airplane hijackers, and was banned in Britain in 2010.

More than 20 supporters of the group have been arrested over terrorism offenses, including a foiled plot to blow up central London nightclub Ministry of Sound and a bomb attack on London's Territorial Army base.

Abu Nusaybah, a friend of Adebolajo's, has asserted in a BBC interview that Adebolajo became withdrawn after he allegedly suffered abuse by Kenyan security forces during interrogation in prison there.

Anti-terrorism head Mwaniki on Sunday rejected those allegations. He said at the time there were no indications of torture or abuse, but that the unit would further investigate.

Mwaniki said dozens of foreign youth are arrested every year attempting to cross the Kenyan border to join al-Shabab, which claims to be fighting a jihad or holy war against the Somali government and African Union forces.

Al-Shabab controlled Mogadishu from roughly 2007 to 2011. The group still dominates most of south central Somalia but has seen its territory reduced after military pushes by African Union and Somali forces.

According to an August U.S. State Department report on terrorism, al-Shabab continues to maintain training camps in southern Somalia for young recruits, including Americans who have traveled there from Somali communities in the United States.

The camps have churned out dozens of bombers who've launched attacks in and outside Somalia.

Al-Shabab boasts several hundred foreign fighters, mostly East African nationals and veterans from the Iraqi and Afghanistan wars.

British officials have been on the lookout for security threats originating from Somalia for some years.

In a speech in 2010, Jonathan Evans, then head of Britain's MI5 domestic security service, warned that "a significant number" of British residents were training in al-Shabab camps to fight in the insurgency there.

"I am concerned that it is only a matter of time before we see terrorism on our streets inspired by those who are today fighting alongside al-Shabab," he said.

London police said another man in his 20s was stabbed Sunday in Woolwich close to where Rigby was killed, momentarily rattling people in the area. But Scotland Yard said early indications were that the stabbing was not related to terrorism or to Wednesday's killing. A spokesman said the victim was not a soldier, and that his injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Osborne, head of Scotland Yard's counterterrorism command, said officers are pursuing CCTV, social media, forensic and intelligence leads in the investigation. He appealed for anyone who knew the two attackers to contact police with information.

British officials said Sunday they are also setting up a new terrorism task force to tackle radical preachers and extremism. Home Secretary Theresa May said the group will look at whether new powers and laws are needed to clamp down on religious leaders and organizations who promote extremist messages and who target potential recruits in British jails, schools and mosques.

Jennifer Hudson Returning to 'Idol'?

Today in show business news: Jennifer Hudson might become an?American Idol?judge, Jon Stewart finds a leading man for his risky directing debut, and Tom Cruise walks away from a movie.?

RELATED: What the Winklevii and Former Bush Staffers Have in Common

Well, it looks like American Idol is sticking to its not terribly great plan to bring back old contestants to be judges next season. The word on the street today is that Jennifer Hudson, booted early from her season only to get the last laugh in Oscar form, is in talks to join the panel next season. There's nothing wrong with this idea, exactly, but I don't know that it will attract many people who weren't going to watch the show anyway. Unless of course they implement a rule that when they reach the Top 7 (which is when she was eliminated) she can pick one remaining contestant and take their place for the rest of the competition to see how far she gets. It'll keep the contestants on their toes and she'll get the chance to claim her long-denied crown. That would be interesting. Otherwise? Who cares.?[Deadline]

RELATED: Jon Stewart Gives Up on Twitter Punditry

Jon Stewart has found the lead for his directorial debut, Rosewater. He's cast Gael Garcia Bernal as a journalist who travels to Iran to report on elections only to be detained and tortured for 118 days. Bernal is an interesting actor, so Stewart chose wisely there, but this whole project still makes me nervous. If Stewart goes and makes a clunky geopolitical film, will he lose any of his ability to make fun of other political bozos? I mean, he's weathered charges of self-seriousness before, but this is a big, Ben Afflecky, going-for-broke kind of a thing. What if it's a dud? It's a scary possibility. But I guess he's been doing The Daily Show?long enough that he's willing to take the risk. Good for him. Nicely chosen, Stewart. Now don't f--k it up. [The Wrap]

Tom Cruise has abruptly dropped out of Guy Ritchie's big movie version of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., saying he wants to focus on making Mission: Impossible 5. Cruise was to star in the film alongside Armie Hammer, and was going to start filming in the fall. But now Warner Bros. has to scramble to find a lead while Cruise goes back to the franchise he knows. He probably made the right choice. I mean,?M:I basically is the same thing as U.N.C.L.E., so why not stick with the known property if you're going to do a gadget-y spy thing. Plus, Guy Rithcie's Sherlock movies are fun and all, but they're a little lightweight. So, who should replace Cruise? They're obviously looking for an older actor to offset Hammer's youngness, so... Hugh Jackman? I don't know if he's a big enough name, considering they first had George Clooney and then Tom Cruise. So who does that leave? Brad Pitt isn't right for this kind of a thing. Robert Downey Jr.? How many other megastars are there, really? Warner Bros. has got their work cut out for them. Maybe they could make it The Woman from U.N.C.L.E. and cast Meryl Streep. [Deadline]

Then he busts out of jail and sets out to find her, while Ben Foster hangs around as a concerned police officer. It looks like it's gorgeously shot and Affleck and Mara are good actors, so this will probably be good, right? The Hollywood Reporter's review wasn't so strong, but that's only one person. Brewers break Bucs' streak? |? Angels win again

By RICH ROVITO

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:35 p.m. ET May 24, 2013

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Poor starting pitching has been to blame for much of the Milwaukee Brewers' losing ways over the past few weeks. Marco Estrada worked to change that Friday night.

Estrada gave up one run over seven innings and retired the first 14 batters he faced in leading the Brewers to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Milwaukee had lost 16 of 20 games entering the contest, while the Pirates had a four-game winning streak snapped and lost for just the third time in 14 games

"He had great location today. His fastball was live. He really located it well," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. "He pitched up when he needed to. He had a good breaking ball and a good changeup and commanded all of his pitches."

Estrada (4-2) didn't allow a hit until a two-out bloop single to left field by Neil Walker in the fifth inning. He struck out eight and didn't walk a batter. He fanned eight of 12 Pittsburgh batters at one point.

"I've been struggling a lot with my curveball. I felt like today that I threw a lot of them for strikes. I just built off of that," Estrada said. "I had really good fastball command and I had a lot of swings (and) misses on the changeup."

Roenicke opted to remove Estrada after seven innings.

"I didn't realize my pitch count was at 100. I wanted to go back out," Estrada said. "You always want to give more. I wish I could have thrown a complete game and given the bullpen a couple more days rest, but I gave the team a chance to win."

Estrada improved his career record to 5-0 against the Pirates, including eight starts.

"He didn't leave many balls over the plate," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "He is tough on us. He is just able to step up and really get the ball in locations he wants to against us. Sure we had a couple balls to hit but it wasn't easy by any means."

Estrada said he's been attempting to mimic the fast-paced pitching of teammate Kyle Lohse.

"He just gets the ball and goes. He throws a lot of strikes," Estrada said. "Everyone is more alert. It showed today with the defense. I was so quick."

Four Brewers relievers combined to record the final six outs. Francisco Rodriguez retired the final batter to record his first save of the season and 295th of his career. Rodriguez's last save came last July 18.

Rodriguez entered the game after Brewers closer Jim Henderson sustained a right hamstring injury while attempting to field a hard grounder off the bat of Russell Martin.

"He felt his hamstring grab on him," Roenicke said. "We'll re-evaluate it tomorrow and see where we are. I don't think it's just going to be a day."

Roenicke said he's unsure if he'll name a closer if Henderson is out for an extended period.

"I don't know if we want to go with just one person. We may look at the matchups and see what they are every night," he said.

Rodriguez said he's prepared to close if called upon, but expressed concern for his injured bullpen mate.

"That's the last thing you want to see," Rodriguez said. "Jim's been doing such a good job and to see him go down like that is not good at all. Hopefully, we can have him as soon as possible."

Estrada outpitched Pirates starter A.J. Burnett (3-5), who gave up three hits and two earned runs over seven innings. Burnett struck out six and walked two. He retired 17 of the final 19 batters he faced. The Brewers managed just four hits for the game.

"Once I got some work in, I settled down and got to where I needed to be," Burnett said. "That is a heck of outing from both guys. You may beat me but you will never out-compete me."

The Brewers scored their only runs of the game in second inning. Aramis Ramirez led off the inning with a walk. After Martin Maldonado struck out, Carlos Gomez laced an opposite-field, line-drive double that just missed hitting Ramirez, who was leading off first base. Ramirez and Gomez scored on Alex Gonzalez's one-out double.

"That was big. It was a good pitch and Alex went down and got it. It was smart hitting," Roenicke said. "We certainly needed to get a lead and with the way Marco pitched we held on."

The Pirates didn't threaten until the sixth inning, when Starling Marte tripled down the left-field line with two outs. Estrada struck out Travis Snider to end the inning. Pittsburgh finally got to Estrada in the seventh when

Walker hit a two-out double, scoring Martin, who reached on a fielder's choice.

"(Estrada) made pitches when he had to. We didn't give ourselves enough opportunities to capitalize," Walker said. "When he has been really good, this is the game he throws."

Notes: Estrada laced an opposite-field single in the fifth inning, one of only three hits against Burnett. "He threw me a fastball and I'm pretty sure he missed. I just made contact and it found a hole," Estrada said. .The Brewers placed starting pitcher Hiram Burgos on the 15-day disabled list. Relief pitcher Tom Gorzelanny was reinstated from the DL. . Burnett entered the game with a National League-leading 79 strikeouts. The only other Pirate pitcher since 1900 to have at least 79 strikeouts by the end of May is Bob Veale, who had 81 in 1966. Burnett added six strikeouts to his season total Friday night .The game marked the start of stretch in which Milwaukee will play 20 games over 20 days. .Estrada threw 100 pitches, 73 for strikes. Burnett threw 99 pitches, 65 for strikes. .The Brewers won for the first time in 20 tries this season when scoring three or fewer runs.

Beautiful Prints From Iconic New Yorker Artist Adrian Tomine

Adrian Tomine has a talent for capturing the strangeness and beauty of life in a city, from creeping Brooklyn gentrification to the subway-borne Missed Connection. His frequent illustrations for The New Yorker have always made me wish I could own a larger print?in fact, a copy of his iconic post-Hurricane Sandy cover hangs in our living room.

Luckily, Tomine maintains an online store where you can buy select pieces, including bevy of new large-format prints from New York Drawings, the beautiful collection of New York-centric illustrations he recently published with Drawn and Quarterly. At $250, they?re a pricey buy?but considering the name the 38-year-old Tomine has made for himself over the course of his career, it?s easy to think of them as investments. [Adrian Tomine Prints]

Kids from tornado-hit school reunite with teachers

MOORE, Okla. (AP) ? Students from an elementary school flattened by a tornado in an Oklahoma City suburb have reunited with their teachers and collected what belongings could be salvaged from the wrecked building.

Some brought thank you cards. First-grader Crisily (KRIS'-ih-lee) Dixon was eager to see a gym teacher and for a chance to say goodbye for the school year.

Her grandmother Cheryle Dixon said the girl was not at the Plaza Towers Elementary when the tornado struck, killing seven students. Her father had picked her up an hour earlier when he learned of the severity of the storm.

Dixon says the girl's face "just turned pale" when she saw photos of the damage.

She says Crisily shed a lot of tears. Thursday's event was held at a school that was not damaged.

May 23, 2013 ? A billon-frames-per-second film has captured the vibrations of gold nanocrystals in stunning detail for the first time.

The film, which was made using 3D imaging pioneered at the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN) at UCL, reveals important information about the composition of gold. The findings are published in the journal Science.

Jesse Clark, from the LCN and lead author of the paper said: "Just as the sound quality of a musical instrument can provide great detail about its construction, so too can the vibrations seen in materials provide important information about their composition and functions."

"It is absolutely amazing that we are able to capture snapshots of these nanoscale motions and create movies of these processes. This information is crucial to understanding the response of materials after perturbation. "

Scientists found that the vibrations were unusual because they start off at exactly the same moment everywhere inside the crystal. It was previously expected that the effects of the excitation would travel across the gold nanocrystal at the speed of sound, but they were found to be much faster, i.e., supersonic.

The new images support theoretical models for light interaction with metals, where energy is first transferred to electrons, which are able to short-circuit the much slower motion of the atoms.

The team carried out the experiments at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory using a revolutionary X-ray laser called the "Linac Coherent Light Source." The pulses of X-rays are extremely short (measured in femtoseconds, or quadrillionths of a second), meaning they are able to freeze all motion of the atoms in any sample, leaving only the electrons still moving.

However, the X-ray pulses are intense enough that the team was able to take single snapshots of the vibrations of the gold nanocrystals they were examining. The vibration was started with a short pulse of infrared light.

The vibrations were imaged a short time later in 3D using the coherent diffraction imaging methods pioneered in LCN by the Robinson group. The 3D movies reveal in exquisite detail the distortions taking place within the nanocrystal, with the fastest vibrations repeating every 90 picoseconds.

Professor Robinson, also from the LCN and the group leader, said: "This work represents an impressive example of teamwork by about a hundred people at SLAC. The SLAC linear accelerator was built in 1957 in direct response to the news of Sputnik.

"After compelling 50 years of sensational high energy physics, that machine has been refitted as a laser by the addition of a 100m long array of magnets. This 3km-sized machine produces a beam which is focused onto a crystal smaller than a micron in a pulse so short that all motion of its atoms is frozen still."

Aniston, 'Ellen' stage 'Friends' reunion ? sort of

TV

Jennifer Aniston learned something on Wednesday: Don't show up at Matthew Perry's house at 8 a.m. You might not like what happens.

All she wanted was to get some advice for her co-hosting stint on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," but Aniston's sense of timing was apparently bad. Or good, for fans of "Friends" looking for a mini-reunion. In an (obviously staged, but still funny) pre-taped segment that aired on the show, Aniston is shown knocking on her former "Friends" co-star's home at an ungodly hour. (Perry co-hosted the show in April and is set to return later this month.)

What advice does he offer? "Maybe you shouldn't show up at somebody's house at 8:00 in the morning. You should call first."

When she protests that they used to walk into each others' apartments all the time ("we're friends!") he reminds her "that was a TV show." They do a little wordplay with mistaken first names and a reference to his recently-canceled "Go On" series, and then things get weird: Dramatic music plays and Courtney Cox walks out of his front door. Along with a few other special guests.

"I really should have called first," says a shell-shocked Aniston as Perry turns to head inside, yelling, "(Matt) LeBlanc, get out of the fountain, man!" as though yet another member of "Friends" was hanging around.

Then, on Wednesday's show DeGeneres asked about the possibility of a real reunion among the "Friends" actors.

"Doing that little bit with Matty and Court yesterday was ...we were allvery nostalgic and miss working together,? said Aniston. "And love each other andit?s a great thing to go back to your family like that. And also knowthat people will love it.?

Hey, this could happen! Just probably not at 8a.m.

New screening approach uncovers potential alternative drug therapies for neuroblastoma

May 23, 2013 ? Nearly two-thirds of patients with high-risk neuroblastoma -- a common tumor that forms in the nerve cells of children -- cannot be cured using tumor-killing cancer drugs. A study published by Cell Press in the May 23 issue of Chemistry & Biology reveals a new genomic approach to screen for compounds that could inhibit tumor growth by causing cancer cells to differentiate, or convert from immature cells to more specialized cell types. Using this screening method, the researchers identified a compound that causes neuroblastoma cells to differentiate, uncovering a promising new treatment strategy for this highly malignant pediatric cancer.

"New treatment approaches are very much needed for children with high-risk childhood cancers; that is, those that are metastatic at diagnosis and likely to recur," says senior study author Kimberly Stegmaier of the Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center and the Broad Institute of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. "By focusing on an alternative strategy to treating neuroblastoma tumors, we identified a compound class that in early testing in neuroblastoma cells in the laboratory shows promise for treating children with this disease."

Beyond the standard approach of using drugs that kill tumor cells, another promising strategy is to identify compounds that promote differentiation, which causes tumor cells to stop dividing and growing. But the benefits of differentiation therapy had not been fully explored.

To address this need, Stegmaier and her team developed a method to screen small molecules for their ability to trigger differentiation in neuroblastoma cells. First, they treated these cells with drugs known to induce differentiation and looked for accompanying changes in the activity levels of genes. They found that 59 genes showed changes related to differentiation. Using this genetic signature for differentiation, they then screened nearly 2,000 small molecules and identified one compound that strongly promoted differentiation in neuroblastoma cells, especially when combined with a drug already approved to treat this type of cancer.

The newly identified compound works by selectively inhibiting a subset of gene-regulating proteins called histone deacetylases (HDACs). "This work supports the need to develop selective HDAC inhibitors for clinical application and, more broadly, illuminates the power of integrating signature-based screening with new approaches to chemical synthesis to provide novel biological insights into human disease," Stegmaier says.
