ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Pound for pound, spider silk is one of the strongest materials known: Research by MIT's Markus Buehler has helped explain that this strength arises from silk's unusual hierarchical arrangement of protein building blocks.
Now Buehler -- together with David Kaplan of Tufts University and Joyce Wong of Boston University -- has synthesized new variants on silk's natural structure, and found a method for making further improvements in the synthetic material.
And an ear for music, it turns out, might be a key to making those structural improvements.
The work stems from a collaboration of civil and environmental engineers, mathematicians, biomedical engineers and musical composers.?
"We're trying to approach making materials in a different way," Buehler explains, "starting from the building blocks" -- in this case, the protein molecules that form the structure of silk. "It's very hard to do this; proteins are very complex."
Other groups have tried to construct such protein-based fibers using a trial-and-error approach, Buehler says. But this team has approached the problem systematically, starting with computer modeling of the underlying structures that give the natural silk its unusual combination of strength, flexibility and stretchiness.
Buehler's previous research has determined that fibers with a particular structure -- highly ordered, layered protein structures alternating with densely packed, tangled clumps of proteins (ABABAB) -- help to give silk its exceptional properties. For this initial attempt at synthesizing a new material, the team chose to look instead at patterns in which one of the structures occurred in triplets (AAAB and BBBA).
Making such structures is no simple task. Kaplan, a chemical and biomedical engineer, modified silk-producing genes to produce these new sequences of proteins. Then Wong, a bioengineer and materials scientist, created a microfluidic device that mimicked the spider's silk-spinning organ, which is called a spinneret.
Even after the detailed computer modeling that went into it, the outcome came as a bit of a surprise, Buehler says. One of the new materials produced very strong protein molecules -- but these did not stick together as a thread. The other produced weaker protein molecules that adhered well and formed a good thread. "This taught us that it's not sufficient to consider the properties of the protein molecules alone," he says. "Rather, [one must] think about how they can combine to form a well-connected network at a larger scale."
The results are reported in a paper published in the journal Nano Today.
The team is now producing several more variants of the material to further improve and test its properties. But one wrinkle in their process may provide a significant advantage in figuring out which materials will be useful and which ones won't -- and perhaps even which might be more advantageous for specific uses. That new and highly unusual wrinkle is music.
The different levels of silk's structure, Buehler says, are analogous to the hierarchical elements that make up a musical composition -- including pitch, range, dynamics and tempo. The team enlisted the help of composer John McDonald, a professor of music at Tufts, and MIT postdoc David Spivak, a mathematician who specializes in a field called category theory. Together, using analytical tools derived from category theory to describe the protein structures, the team figured out how to translate the details of the artificial silk's structure into musical compositions.
The differences were quite distinct: The strong but useless protein molecules translated into music that was aggressive and harsh, Buehler says, while the ones that formed usable fibers sound much softer and more fluid.
Buehler hopes this can be taken a step further, using the musical compositions to predict how well new variations of the material might perform. "We're looking for radically new ways of designing materials," he says.
Combining materials modeling with mathematical and musical tools, Buehler says, could provide a much faster way of designing new biosynthesized materials, replacing the trial-and-error approach that prevails today. Genetically engineering organisms to produce materials is a long, painstaking process, he says, but this work "has taught us a new approach, a fundamental lesson" in combining experiment, theory and simulation to speed up the discovery process.
Materials produced this way -- which can be done under environmentally benign, room-temperature conditions -- could lead to new building blocks for tissue engineering or other uses, Buehler says: scaffolds for replacement organs, skin, blood vessels, or even new materials for use in civil engineering.
Elliott Schwartz, professor emeritus of music at Bowdoin College, says: "For centuries, mathematics, logic and science have provided important models for musical structures, processes, and our understanding of sonic materials. The present research may well lead to one more important chapter in this ongoing story of mutual interaction."
It may be that the complex structures of music can reveal the underlying complex structures of biomaterials found in nature, Buehler says. "There might be an underlying structural expression in music that tells us more about the proteins that make up our bodies. After all, our organs -- including the brain -- are made from these building blocks, and humans' expression of music may inadvertently include more information that we are aware of."
"Nobody has tapped into this," he says, adding that with the breadth of his multidisciplinary team, "We could do this -- making better bio-inspired materials by using music, and using music to better understand biology."

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) ? After her father and stepmother were arrested last year for chaining her to a dresser, young Jersey Bridgeman received something of a fresh start when she began kindergarten this fall in northwestern Arkansas.
Then, last week, the 6-year-old's body was found in a vacant home two doors from where she had been living with her mother.
"The fact that she went through what she went through when she was 5. ... And then this happens," Chelsea Jouett said Tuesday after dropping a teddy bear off at Jersey's home. "She had such a rough life."
Police have arrested neighbor and family friend Zachary Holly, 28, in Jersey's death. Holly is due in court Wednesday in Bentonville, a city about 215 miles northwest of Little Rock that is best known as the home of Wal-Mart's headquarters.
Holly was being held on capital murder, kidnapping and residential burglary charges Tuesday night at the Benton County Jail. A judge is likely to appoint a lawyer to represent him during his court appearance Wednesday.
Holly's arrest Monday came about a week after Jersey was found dead in an empty house next to the mobile home where Holly lived. Police said a search turned up the girl's body just minutes after someone reported her missing Nov. 20.
So far, Bentonville police have not said how Jersey died or released any possible motives. Chief Jon Simpson said many questions about the investigation will be answered when a probable cause affidavit comes out Wednesday.
Simpson said Holly worked at a restaurant in town called The Flying Burrito Company. The manager, Tabitha Stevens, confirmed that Holly worked there but declined to comment further.
One neighbor, Julie Pickard, said Tuesday that Holly wept the day Jersey's body was found.
"He was crying for a long time," said Pickard, who lives on the other side of the home where Jersey's body was found.
Later that day, Pickard said, police knocked on her door and told her to let them know if she saw a man wearing Mountain Dew pajama pants.
"(Holly) was wearing Mountain Dew pajama pants," Pickard said.
No one answered the door Tuesday at the mobile home where police say Holly lived with his wife. A child's bicycle rested on a patch of grass near the home.
Simpson, the police chief, told The Associated Press the couple didn't have any children but that Holly's wife has a child who is "pretty much the same age as our victim." Simpson described Holly as "an acquaintance" and a friend of Jersey's family.
Next door, a child's bike with training wheels lay in front of the house where police said Jersey lived with her mother, DesaRae Bridgeman. Nearby was a deflated balloon decorated with the kinds of princesses that fill little girls' dreams.
Less than a mile away, Jersey's family on Tuesday buried the little girl who lived through more than her share of hardship. Police said the family requests privacy as they grieve.
Jersey's death comes after her father and stepmother chained the girl to a dresser last year. David Bridgeman told investigators he restrained his daughter to keep her from getting into medication and other things around the house in nearby Rogers.
David Bridgeman and Jersey's stepmother, Jana Bridgeman, pleaded guilty in June to false imprisonment, permitting abuse of a minor and endangering the welfare of a minor. She is serving a 12-year prison sentence, plus three years for a probation revocation. He is serving an 18-year prison sentence.
Meanwhile, those who knew Jersey are remembering the little girl who was still joyful despite what was, by all indications, a difficult life.
"I don't know how she dealt with it, but she dealt with it and she still smiled the whole time," family friend Mike Whitcomb said.

Oil prices fell Tuesday as traders remained unsure whether positive U.S. economic news signals an increase in fuel demand.
Traders weighed news that might have been expected to push oil prices higher. U.S. holiday spending and consumer confidence both rose. And negotiations over the next installment on Greece's bailout proved successful.
However, some analysts warned that it's still not clear that demand for oil is picking up.
Oil prices could get a short-term lift from the Greece deal, said Edward Bell, a commodities analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit. Indeed, oil rose in overnight trading after the Greek deal was announced. But prices turned negative in morning trading in the U.S.
Crude oil fell 56 cents to close at $87.18 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"The eurozone has not yet escaped its economic woes and there are no clear signs of a recovery in demand, meaning we expect there will be a drag on oil prices going into 2013," Bell said.
At the pump, the national average for a gallon of regular fell a fraction of a penny from Monday's price to $3.419, according to AAA.
Brent crude, which is used to set prices for many international varieties of oil, fell $1.05 to $109.87 a barrel on London's ICE Futures exchange.
In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:
? Wholesale gasoline for December delivery rose 0.58 cent to $2.7321 a gallon.
? Natural gas rose 3.9 cents to $3.769 per 1,000 cubic feet.
? Heating oil fell 3.71 cents to $3.0094 a gallon.

Come December,?Microsoft?will be putting its enterprise clients on a high-CAL diet. If you thought you were getting an ?all you can eat? buffet when you licensed software from ?The Big Guy,? well, all we can say is, check your ?CAL-orie? count.
?CAL? stands for something Microsoft calls a ?user Client-Access License,? and it is definitely not a free refill plan.
For businesses whose employees use Microsoft software on more than one device, including tablets and smartphones, the CAL-oric content will increase, and so will the fee.
Analysts see this as a new (weight) gain to enterprise budgets since a popular trend inside the workspace today is ?bring-your-own-device.??That?s where company employees venture outside of corporate licensing lines by using their own tablets, laptops, or smartphones for work. But does this constitute corporate use or personal use? ?Is it really budget-clogging fat if my employee wants to consume the personal treats he or she brings from home?
That question remains unchallenged, at least for the moment. ?In the current licensing model, an enterprise obtains two licenses for Microsoft software. First, there?s the software that runs on the company?s computer servers. Check. But the enterprise has also signed on to pay a fee based on the number of ?clients? that use that software. So Company A with 10,000 employees pays a lot more more for Microsoft software than Company B with only 1,000 employees. Can?t argue with that ? or can we?
While we?re counting?client access licenses or?CALs, let?s count the good CALs and the bad. ?A ?good? CAL may be the ?device CAL? because it covers each device, not each employee. So there is just one license fee, no matter how many employees use that device. The reason this is good for licensees is that, very often, one PC is shared by many employees, such as a PC in a nurse?s station or a warehouse. The ?bad? CALs, at least for the end-users are the ??user CALs.? ?These go straight to the hips and the belly and the love handles because they covers each employee, no matter how many devices that employee uses. But wait, this a a good CAL for companies who let their employees access work files and emails from home computers, tablets, and smartphones.
It used to be that device CALs and user CALs cost the same?making the user CAL a much smarter bet for bring-your-own-device workplaces. But on December 1, Microsoft will be increasing the prices for the user CAL by 15 percent! ? And you thought the big bloat was just for Thanksgiving!
The easier-to-digest news is that any nterprise that has a multiyear agreement with Microsoft won?t be faced with a price increase until that agreement expires.
But, longer term, enterprise CIOs will not be happy. The workplace needs Windows?to run their enterprise software, even as employees bring iPhones, iPads, and Google Android?devices to work. (The higher price will affect Windows phones and Surface tablets, too, though companies can probably score a better deal from Microsoft for an all-Windows workplace.)
Here?s?a list of the rich, high-CAL?foods you may wish to avoid on your new low-CAL diet.
?
. Effective Dec. 1, 2012, the cost of the following User CALs will increase 15 percent:
Bing Maps Server CAL
Core CAL Suite
Enterprise CAL Suite
Exchange Server Standard and Enterprise CAL
Lync Server Standard, Enterprise, and Plus CAL
Project Server CAL
SharePoint Server Standard and Enterprise CAL
System Center 2012 Client Management Suite
System Center Configuration Manager
System Center Endpoint Protection
Visual Studio Team Foundation Server CAL
Windows Multipoint Server CAL
Windows Server CAL
Windows Server Remote Desktop Services CAL, Terminal Services CAL
Windows Server Rights Management Services CAL
Can I get a ?Tummy Tuck??
Before you go on a hunger strike, here are some options you?ll want to consider.
If your CALs are provisioned in an enterprise agreement (EA), you?ll want to take a look at your renewal date. If it?s coming up between December 2012 and March 2013, you might want to consider an early renewal to take advantage of current User CAL pricing before the Dec. 1 price bump. Similarly, if you are considering adding a new User CAL to your EA in the future, you might want to do so now before the 15 percent increase goes into effect.
If you do not have an EA, but rather are procuring User CALs under a Select or Open Agreement, now is the time to consider making that change. Entering into an EA before Dec. 1 will lock in current User CAL pricing for the duration of your agreement. This can result in significant savings when you project the 15 percent increase out over the course of three years.
Lastly, make sure that the User CAL model is right for your organization. Historically, the conversation about user versus device centered on access rights versus price point.
According to the SHI Blog: ?The trend is clear ? today?s workforce is using more devices than ever to connect to the cloud to drive business value. We can expect Microsoft and other software providers to react accordingly. Take this time to review your organization?s licensing environment and reaffirm which CAL model is most appropriate for you. But remember: either way, every qualified device or user must be licensed. No exceptions.? ?[24x7]

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will launch a multipronged push this week to garner support for his proposals to solve U.S. fiscal problems, meeting with business executives at the White House and visiting a small business in Pennsylvania to press his case.
Obama has sought to go on the offensive since his re-election on November 6 in the fight with Republicans over the "fiscal cliff" - a combination of tax increases and spending cuts that would go into effect next year if the two sides do not reach a deal to stop it.
As part of that effort, the White House released a report on Monday showing the impact that middle class tax increases would have on consumers and the retail industry.
On Tuesday, a White House official said, the president will meet with a group of small-business owners. On Wednesday he will host an event with "middle class Americans who would be impacted if Congress fails to act to extend the middle class tax cuts," the official said. He will also hold a meeting with business leaders, something he has done previously.
On Friday, he will visit a manufacturing facility of The Rodon Group, a small business that is a manufacturer for K'NEX Brands, a toy company with products including Tinkertoy and Angry Bird Building Sets.
"The president will travel to Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, to continue making the public case for action by visiting a business that depends on middle class consumers during the holiday season, and could be impacted if taxes go up on 98 percent of Americans at the end of the year," the official said.
Obama's visit and his meetings at the White House are designed to put pressure on congressional Republicans to extend tax cuts for middle-income people while ending them for families who make more than $250,000 a year.
Gaining the support of the business community is a key part of Obama's strategy. Reinforcing that, the White House released an analysis by its National Economic Council that said millions of small-business owners would suffer if the middle class taxes went up next year.

A fire engulfed a garment factory outside Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, trapping many workers and killing at least 112 people in the building without emergency exits.
Authorities said the fire started on the ground floor late Saturday and spread upward, cutting off staircases and preventing workers' escape. Some survivors were rescued from the eight-story building's roof.
Thousands of onlookers and anxious relatives gathered at the burned-out factory Sunday awaiting word on relatives who worked there.
Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the United States and Europe.

Buying a Chicago home is full of decisions to make?everything from location to budget to what type of mortgage loan you want. Two types of loans?fixed-rate mortgages and adjustable-rate mortgages?each have their own features and benefits that an individual buyer might want to take advantage of, so how do you decide which is right for you?
The The Wall St. Journal recently reported that 30% to 40% of jumbo loan applications at Bank of America this last July were for adjustable loans. Many buyers are drawn to these types of mortgages because of its low interest rate upfront. For a set time period in the beginning of the loan?three years, five years?adjustable loans offer an interest rate that is lower than what is offered with a fixed-rate loan. After that time period, the mortgage rate will adjust to the current rates, which could be much higher than the low initial rate. Of course, the new rate could also be lower, but given that the current rates are at historical lows, it?s much more likely that the interest rates will go up in the future.
A fixed-rate mortgage is a bit more conservative?these loans typically have a term of 30 years (though could be 15 years as well). Even though you are paying more out-of-pocket money upfront with a higher rate, a fixed-rate mortgage means no surprises down the road. You know exactly what your monthly payment will be for what time period, and that won?t change. Now is an especially lucrative time for Chicago real estate buyers to get a fixed-rate loan because interest rates are historically low, and gives buyers an opportunity to lock that rate in for the next 15 or 30 years.
But while it can be tempting to enter into a loan making the smallest possible payments, my approach is is to be conservative with a fixed-rate loan to avoid the unpredictability that comes with an adjustable rate.
It?s extremely important to discuss the different types of adjustable loans with a mortgage person before getting one, as it?s critical that you as a buyer understand all of the nuances of an adjustable-rate loan or any type of hybrid. A few of the risks for Chicago real estate buyers could include:
-Rate increases: This is the obvious risk, but its effects can be swift. After the fixed-rate period is over, those rates could turn up to five percentage points during the sixth year, and can move by two percentage points each year after that.
-Reduced options: If your ARM switches to an unmanageable rate, it is possible to refinance to a fixed-rate mortgage at that time?but since the ARM increase is based on prevailing interest rates, there?s a good chance that a fixed-rate loan will be just as pricey as an adjustable one.
-Need for equity: If you do decide to refinance out of an ARM, you?d need enough equity in your home to be able to do that. That would require a down payment of at least 30% when you purchase the home. If home values have dropped in the time that you?ve had the ARM, you may have to pay down the loan in order to refinance or stick with the current mortgage.
Many high-end buyers have the cash and assets to support the volatility of an ARM, but in the long run, it is a gamble with your future. Being conservative in financing a luxury Chicago home means making a stable investment that can sustain market changes in the foreseeable future.

Sure, Microsoft has already delivered its new Windows Phone 8 OS to the masses, but the WP7.8 release details, on the other hand, have been extremely minimal since we learned about the upgrade earlier this year. Well, according to Microsoft's Greater China Vice President, Windows Phone 7.8 will be hitting the Chinese market in the coming weeks, adding that there's an honest belief both numerical versions (maybe more?) of Redmond's mobile OS could easily live alongside each other in this country. Still, in the "coming weeks" could mean anything, although rumors around the web suggest the 7.8 version could make its official debut as early as next month -- which goes perfectly on par with previous whispers of an eventual launch by the end of 2012. We'll have to wait and see.

Summary: Those of us committed to the holistic approach have long been satisfied of the benefits of alternative therapy. Recent studies recommend & confirm a bias towards this hands on approach.
When this energy is blocked or deficient, disease can result. These energy disruptions are often the result of stress or injury. It is believed that acupressure causes the brain to release endorphins. Endorphins play an important role in immune function, pain relief, stress reduction, & slowing the aging method.
Article Body: All of us know Acupressure has been around for some five,000 years now & those of us involved in Holistic & wellness stay satisfied that the procedures encompassed within this sphere are more efficacious than physical therapy. Every living being has a life force, or energy, called qi or chi (pronounced ?chee?). When this energy, which runs along meridians, is in balance & flowing freely, the body is in a state of health. Acupoints tap in to the the major energy pathways of the body
most low back pain researchers the results are still significant & relevant. In February 2006 a randomized controlled trial took place at The National Taiwan University in Taipei.
Lower back pain has long been the bain of the modern world not only in lost man hours but also because of the numerous side effects, complications & nuances of lower back pain complaints. Further studies now confirm the benefits of acupressure over physical therapy. Albeit that the studies failed to take in to consideration functional status & disability as recommended by
Compared with physical therapy, acupressure was associated with an 89% reduction in significant disability & that improvement was maintained at 6-month follow-up. Study limitations include a confounding psychological effect of therapy; loss of 15.5% of patients to follow-up at 6 months & effectiveness of any modification therapy dependent on the therapist?s process & experience.
129 patients with chronic low back pain received acupressure or physical therapy for one month. Primary endpoints were self-administered Chinese versions of standard outcome measures for low back pain (Roland & Morris disability questionnaire) at baseline, after treatment, & at 6-month follow-up. After treatment, the mean total Roland & Morris disability questionnaire score was significantly lower in the acupressure group than in the physical therapy group irrespective of the difference in absolute score or mean change from baseline.
On a more lighter note Acupressure has also been cited as a new aid for sleepy students. 39 student volunteers found that those who were taught to self-administer acupressure to stimulation points on their legs, feet, hands & heads were less likely to drowse in the coursework of class. The acupressure consisted of light tapping of fingers or using thumbs or forefingers to lightly massage the stimulation points. It was conceded that more study is necessary in relation to acupressure & the effect on human alertness.
Participants were aged 18 to 81 years. Exclusion criteria were pregnancy & contraindication to acupressure. 64 patients were randomized to acupressure & 65 to physical therapy. Conclusive or inconclusive the results still point towards the unquestionable & positive aspects of acupressure & holistic healing.
Looking further in to the positives might this self administered acupressure even be a consideration for babies with ADHD contra Ritalin!

Phase 3 study finds no significant survival difference between blood stem cells and bone marrow transplants for cancer patients
Hackensack, NJ (November 20, 2012) Researchers from John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, one of the nation's 50 best cancer centers, played an important role in a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on October 18 that may change the current blood and marrow transplantation practices. The phase 3, multicenter study compared harvesting stem cells from bone marrow rather than blood and suggests there are benefits to both approaches, but no survival differences between the two methods.
Over the past 10 years, 75 percent of stem cell transplants from unrelated adult donors have used peripheral blood stem cells rather than those harvested from bone marrow without clinical data to support this shift. The study did not find significant survival differences between peripheral-blood stem-cell and bone marrow transplantation from unrelated donors.
"We did find that peripheral-blood stem cells may reduce the risk of graft failure, whereas bone marrow may reduce the risk of developing chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a complication that is frequently debilitating," said study author Scott Rowley, M.D., Chief, Blood and Marrow Transplantation at John Theurer Cancer Center.
GVHD is a common complication that can occur after a stem cell or bone marrow transplant in which the newly transplanted donor cells attack the transplant recipient's body. This can cause a variety of serious side effects, such as skin rashes, liver problems and diarrhea. Chronic GVHD usually starts three months after transplant and can last a lifetime. Its symptoms may include chronic pain, dry eyes and mouth, fatigue, skin rash, weight loss.
"As one of the 10 largest blood and marrow transplant programs in the nation, we remain committed to being on the forefront of the latest transplantation research and treatment," said Andrew L. Pecora, M.D., F.A.C.P., C.P.E., Chief Innovations Officer and Professor and Vice President of Cancer Services, John Theurer Cancer Center.
