Does FAT scare you? - Operation Muffin Top - Connecticut News

I?m going to tell you a secret? something that the smartest, most cutting edge health professionals all know and have been talking about amongst themselves for a very long time. This information isn?t widely known or accepted yet, but it will be?at which point we will all be shaking our heads looking back on this period in medical history and saying ?What were we thinking??

Get ready to be shocked:

High cholesterol doesn?t cause heart disease.

Yes, you read that right, and before you recover completely, consider this: Fully half the people with heart disease have ?normal? cholesterol and fully half the people with elevated cholesterol are healthy as a horse.

Talk to people about living longer and living free from heart disease (or any of the other conditions that rob us of life and vitality) and you?ll invariably hear someone say, ?Yup, gotta do something about my cholesterol?.

Why are we so darn worried about cholesterol when it has practically nothing to do with living long and living well?

Well, for one thing it?s easy to measure. For another, lowering it is an extraordinarily profitable business. Zocor and Lipitor, two cholesterol-lowering drugs, remain in the top ten of every Forbes list of best-selling drugs, and bring in over 30 billion a year for their makers.

And for a third, the idea that high cholesterol causes heart disease is so embedded in our national consciousness that to dislodge it, even with the considerable amount of emerging scientific evidence that the cholesterol hypothesis is simply wrong, would be a massive undertaking. Heck, we?re still buying ?low-fat? cookies and margarine based on information that?s been out of date for 10 years.

So, if not cholesterol, what should we be paying attention to if we want to live longer and live healthier?

The Four Killers: The Real Dangers to Your Heart

  • Inflammation
  • Oxidation
  • Sugar
  • Stress

Inflammation, oxidation, sugar and stress will kill you. Cholesterol won?t.

Inflammation

Inflammation is a silent killer, a contributor to every major degenerative disease from Alzheimer?s to diabetes, from heart disease to cancer. It comes in two flavors- chronic and acute. Acute inflammation is the one we?re all familiar with?it?s what you feel when you stub your toe, get a toothache, pull a muscle or have an allergy attack.

But chronic inflammation is the killer and it flies beneath the radar. It?s your body?s response to small but continuous insults like exposure to toxins, bad diet, stress, cigarettes and the like, and it causes damage to your vascular system. In fact the body uses cholesterol to try to patch up that damage?so blaming cholesterol for the damage is like blaming a St. Bernard for an avalanche!

We can do a great deal to fight inflammation by eating anti-inflammatory foods (fruits and vegetables abound with natural anti-inflammatories like quercetin and other flavonoids and by taking anti-inflammatory supplements (top of the list: omega 3?s!)

Oxidation

Oxidation is another process that ages us. Oxidation is what you see when apple slices left in the air turn brown; that happens inside our bodies every day, the result of attacks on our cells and DNA by rogue molecules called free radicals. Diets high in antioxidants go a long way towards fixing the damage.

Sugar

Sugar is a risk factor for almost everything you don?t want to have?causes something called glycation. which happens when excess sugar in the bloodstream ?gums up the works.? Sugar gloms on to protein in the blood, making it too sticky to pass through small capillaries. It?s one reason why diabetics often have amputations in the extremities like toes and feet and problems in areas like the eyes and the kidneys which are served by small, narrow blood vessels. High blood sugar is far more damaging to the body and to life than cholesterol. And it?s relatively easy to ?fix?.

Stress

Finally, stress is one of the biggest killers on the planet, and, like sugar, far more of a danger to us than cholesterol ever was. Stress hormones age (and shrink) an important area of the brain called the hippocampus which is involved in memory and thinking.

Stress can exacerbate nearly any disease, not to mention that it can slow (or even prevent) recovery. And stress actually makes you fat- the major stress hormone, cortisol, causes the body to store weight around the middle.

In the ?Blue Zones?- areas around the globe where people routinely live to 100 in extraordinary health with all their faculties intact- no one worries about their cholesterol or their saturated fat intake. They don?t have to.

Their lives have built in stress-reducers like extended families and community events; they eat natural whole food diets filled with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. And their sugar intake is naturally low, so they don?t have to worry about it gumming up the works and destroying their health.

Aging may be inevitable, but unhealthy aging is not. If you know what to do you truly can have an extraordinary life well into your 9th and 10th decade, filled with vitality, joy and purpose.

Best of all, it?s not all that hard to do.

The payoff is worth it!

Using Personal Loans Responsibly | Money Infant

Many of the other personal finance bloggers deride personal loans as if they are one of the worst moves you could possibly make with your finances. In some ways they are right, but personally I don?t have quite the same level of disdain that others hold for personal loans. I think that in some instances they can actually make perfect sense.

The best example of a good use of personal loans is for those who are starting a new business. I frequently post about side hustles that you can start while still working a full time job, and while many of these are free to start, at some point you will need to make an investment in your side business if you want to grow. The problem with securing financing for a small business is that without a history of sales and profits you simply cannot get financing.

If you have a great idea you might be able to get startup financing from an angel investor or a venture capital firm, but this comes with a serious downside and for most small businesses should be avoided whenever possible. You see, when you go to venture capitalists and angel investors they want a stake in your business. Ultimately, if your business becomes wildly successful, you could be giving away tens of millions of dollars in value for a pittance.

Banks and credit unions are of no help for a small business startup as they typically want a minimum of 2 years of financial statements, proof of cash flow, and many other financial assurances. As a new business owner you have none of these.

Micro lenders are another source of capital for small businesses, however even these new breed of lenders are looking for a minimum of 1 year of financial success before approving any small business loans.

Even the Small Business Administration requires those seeking government assistance from them to use alternative financial resources, including personal assets, before seeking financial assistance.

Checkbook and chartIn the absence of any friends of family who are willing to lend you the money you need to get your business off the ground and/or growing more rapidly your best source of capital will be through a personal loan.

Now, I don?t agree with people who take personal loans to finance vacations, new Jacuzzis, and other extravagant purchases. In the case of taking a personal loan to help grow or start a new business however you are using the money to create a cash generating asset. In this case I believe the risks associated with personal loans are acceptable considering the potential rewards.

If you are planning on going this route you should definitely do some planning before going out and securing a loan. Determine how much you need for your business, what you will be investing the loan funds in, and what the return on your investment will be realistically. Your return should be sufficient to pay back the personal loan in a reasonable amount of time.

When looking to start a new business you are pretty much on your own and your best option for financing your new startup is going to be a personal loan. You can get more attractive rates versus other personal credit accounts, you don?t put your home at risk as you would with a home equity loan, and you have the benefit of set repayment terms. If you can?t get your business off the ground without a small amount of financing (I would say no more than $25,000), then securing a personal loan might be your best move in the long term.

How will Washington keep weed from crossing the border?

SEATTLE (AP) - So far, no one is suggesting checkpoints or fences to keep Washington state's legal pot within its borders.

But Gov. Jay Inslee insists there are ways to prevent the bulk smuggling of the state's newest cash crop into the black market, including digitally tracking weed to ensure that it goes from where it is grown to the stores where it is sold.

With sales set to begin later this year, he hopes to be a good neighbor and keep vanloads of premium, legal bud from cruising into Idaho, Oregon and other states that don't want people getting stoned for fun.

It's not just about generating goodwill with fellow governors. Inslee is trying to persuade U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder not to sue to block Washington from licensing pot growers, processors and sellers. Marijuana remains illegal under federal law.

"I am going to be personally committed to have a well regulated, well disciplined, well tracked, well inventory-controlled, well law-enforcement-coordinated approach," said Inslee, who is due to give Holder more details this week.

Keeping a lid on the weed is just one of the numerous challenges Washington state authorities and their counterparts in Colorado - where voters also legalized pot use - will face in the coming months.

The potential of regulatory schemes to keep pot from being diverted isn't clear. Colorado already has intensive rules aimed at keeping its medical marijuana market in line, including the digital tracking of cannabis, bar codes on every plant, surveillance video and manifests of all legal pot shipments.

But law enforcement officials say marijuana from Colorado's dispensaries often makes its way to the black market, and even the head of the Colorado agency charged with tracking the medical pot industry suggests no one should copy its measures.

The agency has been beset by money woes and had to cut many of its investigators. Even if the agency had all the money it wanted, the state's medical pot rules are "a model of regulatory overreach," too cumbersome and expensive to enforce, Laura Harris said in a statement.

Last fall, voters made Washington and Colorado the first states to pass laws legalizing the recreational use of marijuana and setting up systems of state-licensed growers, processors and retail stores where adults over 21 can walk in and buy up to an ounce of heavily taxed cannabis.

Both states are working to develop rules for the emerging pot industry.

The Obama administration could sue to block the legal markets from operating, on the grounds that actively regulating an illegal substance conflicts with federal drug law. The DOJ is reviewing the laws but has given no signals about its plans.

It has never sued states like Colorado that have regulated medical marijuana, even though it could under the same legal principles.

Part of the DOJ's political calculus in deciding whether to sue is likely to be how well the department believes the two states can keep the legal weed within their borders. During a meeting with Inslee last week, Holder asked a lot of questions about diversion, Inslee said.

Alison Holcomb, who led Washington's legal pot campaign, said it's important to respect states that haven't legalized weed by not flooding their black markets. The first step, she said, is for the state to figure out how much pot should be produced, and then grant licenses accordingly.

"Excess supply creates incentive to divert outside the state," she said.

Washington's Liquor Control Board is planning a comprehensive survey to estimate how much marijuana is consumed in the state.

Inslee has boasted about the effectiveness of the State Patrol's highway interdiction program in stopping drug trafficking. Traditional police work, combined with inventory controls, will be key to clamping down on diversion, he said.

Digital tracking of the weights of marijuana shipments between processors and retailers would help make sure there isn't "10- to 20-percent shrinkage that's going to the black market," he said.

But even if the state can prevent bulk pot from being diverted, there's nothing to keep customers from walking into multiple stores, or returning to the same store, to collect more than their 1-ounce limit. Some traffickers could recruit many people to buy weed for them.

Tom Gorman, head of the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug-Trafficking Area, said efforts to keep a lid on legal marijuana simply don't work.

Pot from Colorado's medical marijuana system - often described as the most closely regulated in the world - routinely makes its way into Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and points east, often from dispensaries that have sold out the back door, he said.

A brief law enforcement survey the organization conducted last summer turned up numerous cases in which suspects had made purchases at Colorado dispensaries before being busted in other states.

In the past two years, Colorado's medical pot regulators have levied 54 fines against licensed businesses, but have never revoked or suspended a license.

Matt Cook, the former director of Colorado's Medical Marijuana Enforcement Division, defended the "seed-to-store" regulations in the state.

Cook, who is applying for a job as a consultant to Washington's marijuana regulators, noted that at any time officials could check the digital records, pull the surveillance video or drop in for an inspection - and the fear of getting busted keeps people in line.

Bob Hoban, whose law firm represents nearly 100 medical marijuana businesses in Colorado, agreed, and noted another incentive for dispensaries to behave.

"It's a cutthroat business," he said. "If somebody sees something unusual, they're going to provide a tip. ... There's just about as good of a safeguard as you can have for diversion in the state of Colorado, and a lot of that is Big Brother watching you."

No signs Alabama kidnapper is giving up

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) ? More than three days after he allegedly shot a school bus driver dead, grabbed a kindergartner and slipped into an underground bunker, Jimmy Lee Dykes was showing no signs of turning himself over to police.

Speaking into a 4-inch-wide ventilation pipe leading to the bunker, hostage negotiators tried again Thursday to talk the 65-year-old retired truck driver into freeing the 5-year-old boy. One local official said the child had been crying for his parents.

Dykes is accused of pulling the boy from a school bus Tuesday and killing the driver who tried to protect the 21 youngsters aboard. The gunman and the boy were holed up in a small room on his property that authorities likened to a tornado shelter, something common to this area of the South.

"The three past days have not been easy on anybody," Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said at a news briefing late Thursday. He said authorities were communicating with the suspect, and their primary goal was to get the boy home safely.

"There's no reason to believe the child has been harmed," he added.

There were signs that the standoff could continue for some time.

James Arrington, police chief of the neighboring town of Pinckard, said the shelter was about 4 feet underground, with about 6-by-8 feet of floor space and a PVC pipe that negotiators were speaking through.

A state legislator said the shelter has electricity, food and TV. The police chief said the captor has been sleeping and told negotiators that he has spent long periods in the shelter before.

"He will have to give up sooner or later because (authorities) are not leaving," Arrington said. "It's pretty small, but he's been known to stay in there eight days."

Midland City Mayor Virgil Skipper said he has been briefed by law enforcement agents and has visited with the boy's parents.

"He's crying for his parents," he said. "They are holding up good. They are praying and asking all of us to pray with them."

Republican Rep. Steve Clouse, who represents the Midland City area, said he visited the boy's mother Thursday and that she is "hanging on by a thread."

"Everybody is praying with her for the boy," he said.

Clouse said the mother told him that the boy has Asperger's syndrome, an autism-like disorder, as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Police have been delivering medication to him through the pipe, he added.

The normally quiet red clay road leading to the bunker was teeming Friday with more than a dozen police cars and trucks, a fire truck, a helicopter, officers from multiple agencies and news media near Midland City, population 2,300.

Police vehicles have come and gone steadily for hours from the command post, a small church taken over for that use

Early Friday, activity picked up when a team in military-style uniforms, many toting weapons, got out of a big van in the pre-dawn chill and moved into a staging area. One appeared to be dog handler.

But after a chilly night, the activity of law enforcement appeared to slow approaching dawn though a mobile command center remained lit with bright lights. Overhead, a small aircraft with blinking lights flew wide circles high above the man's property early Friday. An ambulance was parked nearby.

Dykes was known around the neighborhood as a menacing figure who neighbors said once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, threatened to shoot children for setting foot on his property and patrolled his yard at night with a flashlight and a firearm.

The chief confirmed that Dykes held anti-government views, as described by multiple neighbors: "He's against the government ? starting with Obama on down."

"He doesn't like law enforcement or the government telling him what to do," he said. "He's just a loner."

Authorities say the gunman boarded a stopped school bus Tuesday afternoon and demanded two boys between 6 and 8 years old. When the driver tried to block his way, the gunman shot him several times and took the 5-year-old boy off the bus.

The bus driver, Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66, was hailed by locals as a hero who gave his life to protect the pupils on his bus.

No motive has been discussed by investigators, but the police chief said the FBI had evidence suggesting it could be considered a hate crime. Federal authorities have not released any details about the standoff or the investigation. The mayor said he hasn't seen anything tying together Dykes' anti-government views and the allegations against him.

Dykes had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to answer charges he shot at his neighbors in a dispute last month over a speed bump. Neighbor Claudia Davis said he yelled and fired shots at her, her son and her baby grandson over damage Dykes claimed their pickup truck did to a makeshift speed bump in the dirt road. No one was hurt.

The son, James Davis Jr., believes Tuesday's shooting was connected to the court date. "I believe he thought I was going to be in court and he was going to get more charges than the menacing, which he deserved, and he had a bunch of stuff to hide and that's why he did it."

Neighbors described a number of other run-ins with Dykes in the time since he moved to this small rural town near the Georgia and Florida borders, a region known for peanut farming.

A neighbor directly across the street, Brock Parrish, said Dykes usually wore overalls and glasses and his posture was hunched-over. He said Dykes usually drove a run-down "creeper" van with some of the windows covered in aluminum foil.

Parrish often saw him digging in his yard, as if he was preparing a spot to lay down a driveway or a building foundation. He lived in a small camping trailer on the site. He patrolled his lawn at night, walking from corner to corner with a flashlight and an assault rifle.

Court records showed Dykes was arrested in Florida in 1995 for improper exhibition of a weapon, but the misdemeanor was dismissed. The circumstances of the arrest were not detailed in his criminal record. He was also arrested for marijuana possession in 2000.

Styrofoam cupcake craft - tutorial - dollar store crafts

Here's a fun and easy cupcake craft that is a perfect project for kids or a girls' night crafting: a Styrofoam cupcake craft. Use these faux cupcakes as pincushions, or to make party centerpieces, ornaments, or fun home decor accents. Read on for instructions, or watch my tutorial video (made on location at CHA).

Project Materials:

  • Paper cupcake wrapper, on hand or $1
  • Styrofoam ball, $1
  • 1 Sheet of white felt, on hand or $.25
  • Ball-head pins, on hand or $1
  • FloraCraft Tuck & Scribe tool (or a knitting needle), on hand
  • Hot glue (low temp), on hand

Total Cost: $1 and up

styrofoam cupcake craft supplies

About the Supplies: You can find cupcake wrappers at the dollar store, as well as small bags of Styrofoam balls (which are, by the way, the exact same as the ones you can get at the craft store - just cheaper!). Use ball head pins for decoration, or if you like, use plain straight pins with a small bead threaded through the end. Or puffy paint. Whatever you have on hand is good!

FloraCraft foam tools

The Tuck & Scribe tool from FloraCraft? (the one that is poky, kind of like a dentist tool) is what made this project so fun and easy. You can pick up a pack of three tools at Joann Fabrics, or I suspect a knitting needle will work in a pinch.

To Make a Ruffly Cupcake:

1. Glue Styrofoam ball into the cupcake cup with low-temp hot glue.

2. Cut about 20 one-inch circles out of the felt. (You might want to do this step the night before while you are watching your favorite guilty-pleasure TV show!) It's okay if the circles are not perfectly round, or exactly one inch.

3. With the Tuck end of the Tuck & Scribe tool (or a knitting needle), poke the center of a felt circle into the Styrofoam ball. Continue to poke felt circles into the ball, filling in gaps as you go.

4. When the cupcake is ruffly enough, stick ball head pins in to decorate the cupcake. Add any additional embellishments (such as ribbons or bows) as desired!
